From director Donald Petrie (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Miss Congeniality) comes another comedy about mismatched romance amplified by slapstick humor, only this one is for the teens. Lindsay Lohan (Mean Girls and Freaky Friday) stars in this story of girl meets boy with a twist of flip-flopping luck. It’s a good attempt with a cute underbelly but this remains a sophomoric effort for Lohan, especially when compared with her serious turn in A Prairie Home Companion opposite Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin. At its core this movie has some fun as well as the always-stunning Lohan who can pull off the down-on-her-luck look without losing the slightest bit of on-screen glamour. And that’s appropriate because, this movie is a good one for her young fans, but besides that, there isn’t much to make Just My Luck lucky enough to be memorable.
The beautiful and successful Ashley (Lohan) has always had the world itself wrapped around her finger, practically handed to her on a silver plate while she parades around in front of her envious but tried-and-true friends in denial that some magical force has blessed her with good luck. On the other side of the yin-yang, there is Jake (Chris Pine of American Dreams) who is literally followed around by rain clouds. The movie takes the point of this coin toss over the top to emphasize what each side of the coin is like, counting them as two separate extremes, balanced by fate and co-existing to keep harmony in the universe. The film presents an interesting paradox, but fails in pace and writing to keep the story as interesting as the premise.
It’s a teen fairytale. When Ashley and Jake meet anonymously at a masquerade party, they share a fateful kiss and the wheel of fortune spins, reversing their roles and of course their luck. Ashley spends much of the movie searching for the Prince Charming who can restore her lost glory. They are set up as the Romeo & Juliet of the cosmos, and she reverts to a sort of Cinderella. Then add in the age-old cautionary tales of taking what you have for granted as well as walking a mile in another person’s shoes, and you have the mysterious journey Ashley makes through the hard times that befall her as she becomes a stronger and better person for it. This is yet another concept that has been creatively explored to no end, but here it is combined with the lure of superstition and calamity, mostly set to a comical beat, but the laughs are more often than not teenage ones and it’s not certain whether teens would even find it that funny.
The only true story here is about coming-of-age, growing out of who you are and being able to see beyond it to who you should be, because the rough times and the falls we take are the things that shape our character more than anything. Depriving Ashley of her happy windfalls makes her weak and vulnerable, but puts her more in touch with reality than she has ever had to be when cabs line up to take her on as a fare and promotions drop into her lap at the first sign of quick thinking on the job. It’s a fable for the youth out there if they’ll even take anything away from it besides that it is a romantic comedy dripping in maple syrup. But honestly, this never tries to be a very deep film, just amusing and mildly thoughtful, and it does well at that but unfortunately it does little else.
